Medical Engineering and Design (MED) Laboratory at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is an inter-disciplinary research team with the objective of developing medical devices, assistive technologies, image-based quantitative biomarkers, and computing tools for diagnosing, monitoring, treating, and potentially preventing musculoskeletal disorders (osteoarthritis/osteoporosis) and disabilities. We closely work with physicians and clinical researchers from Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and Changi General Hospital (CGH) to combine research and technical expertise to address clinical problems affecting Singapore and the World.
Our aim is to provide engineering solutions, tools, and devices to clinical needs, using medical imaging, image analysis, and 3D geometrical and structural analysis techniques by understanding bio-mechanical implications of diseases and disabilities.
Our mission is to advance scientific understanding of musculoskeletal pathologies and disabilities through the application of engineering in medicine for improved quality of life.
Our research themes fall into three categories:
Medical Devices | Medical Imaging / Analysis | Clinical Applications |

– Understanding musculoskeletal pathologies (bone tumors, Osteoarthritis, and Osteoporosis) and their causes (aging, obesity, diabetics, alignment, physical exercise, activities of daily living) and disabilities (primary/secondary, permanent/temporary). |
